Graduating Students

Congratulations prospective graduates, graduation is right around the corner!

The University of Wyoming will not hold its traditional spring commencement ceremonies in May, due to concerns about large gatherings related to the novel coronavirus COVID-19.

Instead, the university is making plans for a virtual ceremony to be broadcast live Saturday, May 16. And other options are being developed for UW’s spring 2020 graduates to celebrate their accomplishments.

“Spring commencement is one of the great traditions of the university, something we all look forward to every year. The decision to modify the ceremonies this year is challenging for everyone,” Acting President Neil Theobald says. “However, under the circumstances, we really have no choice but to look for alternatives to the public gatherings on campus -- just as other universities across the country are doing. Our primary focus is on the health of our graduates, their family and friends, and the hosting community in Laramie.”

While details of the virtual ceremony are in planning -- more information on how students and families can participate will be communicated later -- there are other options for members of the May 2020 graduating class.

First, they have the ability to return for a future spring or winter commencement ceremony. In fact, this is a practice that has been in place for many years at UW.

“UW allows graduates who are not able to participate in their own commencement ceremony -- due to a variety of circumstances, such as internships, study-abroad opportunities and illness -- to participate in a later ceremony that is convenient for them,” Acting Vice President for Student Affairs Kim Chestnut says. “This spring’s graduates can participate in the winter 2020 or spring 2021 ceremonies, if they wish.”

Additionally, UW is repurposing its spring 2020 commencement budget to purchase and deliver keepsakes for graduates, their families and friends. These commencement packages each will include a mortar board, tassel and stole so that graduates can have a “tassel-turning” moment during the virtual ceremony and take photographs. Those students graduating with honors could receive appropriate cords, and graduate students could receive hoods and tams. UW will not provide graduation robes, but they can be purchased if students want them.

Students will receive more information about how to opt in to a commencement package via their UW email accounts next week. Students who already have ordered regalia will be contacted directly by the University Store.

“Nothing is the same as walking across the stage in front of your family and friends, but we hope these options will allow our graduates to still create and preserve memories marking their hard work and achievements,” Chestnut says.

Nursing Pins

Please click the link below to pre-order your nursing pin. The University Store typically does not stock all styles on a regular basis, so pre-ordering is essential to ensure the style you wish to purchase will be available before May’s ceremony. The deadline to order nursing pins for delivery before Graduation is March 2nd at 11:59PM. Due to extended manufacturing times, nursing pins will not be shipped to customers, or arrive in store, until approximately May 4th. If you are in town, we suggest choosing in-store pick up so you can save on shipping and have your pin in time for the Graduation ceremonies in Laramie. If you will not be attending the ceremony, please choose your desired shipping method and pins will ship as soon as they arrive in the store. After the ordering deadline as passed, please contact the University Store directly for any nursing pin inquiries at 307-766-3264.

Please note that the BSN guard attaches to an official pin via a small chain. While some nursing students opt to purchase the pin alone, the pin and guard may be purchased together to complete the set. The BSN guard is rarely purchased alone.

Fine Quality Regalia

Custom licensed fine quality regalia is available to any graduating student or Alumni. Typically fine quality regalia is reserved for individuals who pursue a career as a professor and may need a fine quality gown to use at future commencement ceremonies. There are 2 options for fine quality gowns that the University Store offers:

  1. Custom brown and gold gown, hood, and tam: These purchases go directly through the University Store. Please click this link to access the measurement form that will need to be filled out to ensure the gown is made to the individual’s exact measurements. Email the measurement form, along with the degree (ex. masters in zoology, doctorate in animal science, etc.), name, phone number, and shipping address of the individual ordering to uwyostore-uwgear@uwyo.edu. Doctoral regalia sets are $610. Since gowns are custom, payment will need to be processed over the phone with the University Store before the order will be submitted to Jostens.
  2. Custom fine quality black gown, hood, and tam: Purchases for black fine quality gowns will go through this link. These are for individuals who did not graduate from the University of Wyoming OR simply UW Alumni who would prefer a black gown instead of a brown and gold gown. Price will fluctuate based on embellishments and style chosen.

Please note that fine quality regalia can take up to 8 weeks to arrive.

Faculty Information

Faculty can rent their regalia by filling out the rental order form using the link below. The order deadline for rental regalia is Friday, April 3rd

Please be aware, if a faculty member orders regalia and does not attend the ceremony, the department will still be charged unless cancellation is requested BEFORE the order has shipped (typically no less than 2 weeks before the ceremony).
